There’s something magical about gliding across the calm, glistening waters of the Miles River—paddle in hand, sun on your face, and the natural beauty of Maryland’s Eastern Shore surrounding you. For those of us at Ferry Bridge House, this isn’t just a getaway—it’s our backyard. And it offers some of the most peaceful, scenic kayaking you’ll find anywhere.
Beginner-Friendly Bliss
If you’re new to kayaking, don’t worry—the Miles River is a gentle introduction. Its typically calm conditions make it ideal for first-timers and casual paddlers. Start with a short paddle—an hour or two—to build your confidence and rhythm. Use your core (not just your arms!) for more efficient strokes, and always wear a personal flotation device (PFD). Essentials include water, sunscreen, a hat, and a dry bag for your phone and keys.
Scenic Routes to Explore
One of our favorite beginner-friendly launches is right from the waterfront at Ferry Bridge House. From there, paddle east, and you'll immediately be treated to the classic view of our beautiful home from the water – a truly unique perspective! Continue north and let the current guide you towards the majestic Lombardy Plantation, a stunning 252-acre estate with a rich history, its grand facade peeking through ancient trees along the shore.

From Lombardy, turn back south, hugging the east shore of the Miles River. You can loop around towards Goldsborough Creek, where you’ll discover tranquil coves, a symphony of birdlife, and glimpses of charming waterfront homes nestled among the lush greenery. Each bend in the river offers a new vista, making every paddle a fresh adventure.
A Local Treasure
Whether you're floating lazily, soaking in the quiet serenity, or chasing a hidden cove around the bend, the Miles River offers a rejuvenating escape and a front-row seat to the timeless beauty of the Shore. So grab a kayak, push off from shore, and experience the miles of smiles that await—right here at Ferry Bridge House.
Happy paddling!
